CHOREOGRAPHER'S NOTE: "A Steadfast Softening"
I entered this creation with the DancEast Youth Ensemble with a general vision while intentionally leaving room for discovery. I like to incorporate meaningful discussion, movement exploration, and collaboration within a creative process. I knew the dancers' experiences would shape the piece's evolution.
Our process began with a simple yet meaningful question: "What makes you feel powerful?" The dancers’ responses revealed an interesting divide. Some dancers found power in achievement and productivity—completing tasks, excelling academically, checking off lists. Others found it in moments of connection and community. This contrast became a focus for our piece.
"A Steadfast Softening" depicts one possible path through different embodiments of power. The narrative arc reflects my personal journey and echoes some of the experiences shared by the dancers. While each individual's relationship with power evolves throughout their life, this piece offers a window into specific transformative moments.”
